  • Anna + Ian | Vancouver Island Wedding Videography | Bilston Creek Farm, Metchosin, BC

  • We love festivals and we love filming Weddings on Vancouver Island. We also love Pimms (especially Danielle), dancing in fields, rope swings, vintage cars and good natured people who are clearly in love. Ian + Anna = top 5 weddings for sure. The site of British Columbia's First Ever Wedding! Ian and Anna were married on Anna's family farm in the village of Mechosin near Victoria on Vancouver Island. It's a beautiful property set between the ocean and the forest where they grow lavender, honey and other goodies. Its also the very same farm that the first EVER (non first-nation) wedding in British Columbia. It occurred way back in 1855 between a Martha Chaney and Captain Henry Ella. How cool is that little history nugget?  An Inclusive Festival-Style Wedding We loved the inclusive nature of the day, with friends and family camping on-site and all pitching in to get every[...]
  • Alli + Eric | Wedding Highlight Film | Hatley Castle + Empress Hotel, Victoria BC

  • Directed by Mark Relf Additional Cinematography by Grace Gadston Photography (including cover image) by Blush Wedding Photography Co-ordinated and decorated by Trend Decor and Events Officiated by Barbara Densmore Flowers by Platinum Floral Design Ever wondered how a “Downton Abby” themed wedding would look? Well this is it. Victoria is famed for being more “English than England” (being English I’m just going to say that the claim is a little bit of a stretch) but when you throw in a Hatley Castle you really are pretty much there. We love Hatley Castle. Its such a stunning venue and full of character. Its also home to The X-Men, and thats pretty cool too. I don’t think we’ve ever seen a bride take so much care in designing wedding decor. The attention to detail is simply stunning and Alli’s hard work paid off to create a warm and charming environment. There are several sh[...]
  • Jennifer + Alex | Wedding Highlight Film | Salt Spring Island, BC

  •   Directed, filmed and edited by Mark Relf Additional cinematography by Alvin Keung Planning by French Kiss Events Photography by Erich McVey Flowers by Verbena Floral Design Decor by White Event Studio Make up by Jenny Clark Hair by Conscious Hair Cake by Passion For Cakes Music by Side One Look at this venue! I think this is about a nice a setting that you could imagine and could definitely hit a top 5 list for best back yard weddings of all time. Perched on the shores of the beautiful Salt Spring Island Jennifer and Alex exchanged their vows in front of friends and family before dancing into the night backed by the amazing Side One band.  We were put in touch with Jennifer and Alex by Barb from French Kiss Events. She had seen a few of our Wedding Films and thought we would make a great match for this wedding. One of the best aspects of a back yard wedding is that ev[...]
  • Robby & Joti | "They Are Love" (Pre-Wedding Film) | Fairmont Hotel MacDonald, Edmonton AB

  •   We were so excited when Robby and Joti got in touch with us last year to see if we'd be willing to spend a week with them in Edmonton to film their week long wedding celebrations. Its not often that you get to spend so much time with a couple and this was a fantastic opportunity to produce some really unique content for them. As well creating their wedding films we decided it would be great to come up with something that they could play at their wedding reception. On one of our Skype calls Robby and Joti suggested a movie-trailer/perfume commercial type video which would compliment the classical oscar party style reception they were throwing.  So away I went to have a think about how to make something that felt high-end that I could shoot and edit within a few days (quite a challenge!). The plan was to shoot in a variety of locations to make our "world" feel as big as possible, inc[...]
  • Tamara & Andrew | Wedding Highlight Film | Brock House, Vancouver BC

  • I can't get over Tamara's smile. It doesn't stop! Tamara and Andrew's wedding was one of warmth, family and crazy fun. The day started a little grey but as you can see the sun popped out and gave us the most beautiful lighting conditions and some of my favourite all time wedding-film shots. Check out that sunset and those clouds! This wedding had such great energy with so much personality. Tamara and Andrew put a lot of effort into representing themselves and their cultural backgrounds through the details and activities present at the reception. The bag-piper-entrance was definitely a unique touch and was a great surprise whilst Tamara's Pilipino influences brought music, dancing and good times!  Directed, filmed and edited by Mark Relf Additional cinematography by Daniel Brand Photography by Britney Gill Flowers by Granville Island Florist Make up by Laura Murray Hair b[...]
  • Indy & Sanj | Wedding Film |Akali Singh Temple, Vancouver

  •   Its always the audio that drives the narrative of our wedding films and in most cases its a combination of letters, vows and speeches. But Indy and Sanj didn't have any of those! So what do we do? We talk, listen and pay attention. We spent a little time with them during their reception casually chatting about their relationship and recording what was said.  We're so grateful that these guys were willing to take a little time out to do that, when you watch you'll see it was totally worth it!  We really love this film. Indy and Sanj were such a joy to be around because not only were they very personable and easy going but when they talked about their relationship it reminded us so much of our own experience when we were an ocean apart. Hearing Indy say that his days didn't feel complete unless he'd head from Sanj really put a smile on our faces. We know exactly how that feels! You c[...]
  • Deus Ex: The Mechanical Apartheid

  • You might have gathered from the title, that this is not a wedding film. It’s actually a short film/trailer produced for a video game, called “Deus Ex, Mankind Divided”(made by Eidos Montreal). The trailer was made by the talented folks at Goldtooth Creative in Vancouver and I (Mark) was brought on board to help write, develop, shoot and edit.  This was really an incredible project to be a part of. I spent several years working as the Supervising Editor at Goldtooth Creative and so it was a real pleasure to be back in the studio, working alongside the Director, visual effects artists and management team. All of us working on the film were really invested in the project having also worked on other trailers for this game and and the previous title “Deus Ex, Human Revolution”. We all worked together to develop the story and come up with creative ways to bring a science fiction dystopian fu[...]
  • The Importance of Character in Wedding Filmmaking

  • We like to think of ourselves as story driven film makers and we’re always looking for ways to make each wedding film different and stand out against other wedding videographers in Toronto and Vancouver. I find myself wondering, should I change the structure of our edits? Should I change the way we film? Maybe we do something different with he colours?  But the thing is I like the way we structure edits, the way we film and the way we manipulate colours. I don’t want to change things just for the sake of making something different. When you deliberately stylize your wedding films before even meeting a couple, you're setting yourself up to look dated, one dimensional and "canned". So then we think about the story, how can we that different? When the main plot of a wedding day is essentially the same for the majority of people (two people get ready, get married and party the night away) [...]
  • Isla Gray | Mothers Day 2016 |Vancouver, Toronto, Mexico, UK

  • I'm so lucky to have the most amazing wife in Danielle. She makes me incredibly happy and I'm still a little giddy when ever I wake up net to her. Her greatest gift to me is our daughter Isla. I will never know the pain and discomfort that Danielle went through to bring Isla safety into this world and I will be eternally grateful for that. Last year I made a short film and this year I have done the same. This is literally my favourite project ever! Looking back through all the moments we've shared as a family is a fantastic experience and one I intend to keep doing every year. I can't believe how much little Isla has grown....    For anyone that is interested, the footage was shot on a Sony A7s and a Panasonic LX100. I bought the LX100 to have a more "pocketable" camera that I could carry around and film little snippets as we go. I've been super impressed by this camera! I[...]
  • Ruby & Armand | Wedding Highlight Film | Cecil Green Park House, Vancouver BC

  • I really felt a connection with Ruby and Armand. I think its really just that they reminded me of my and Danielle's relationship. Just like us, they met at a time of their lives when neither of them had absolutely any desire to be in a relationship and they were completely happily single. I read once that you can only truly love someone when you love yourself and I think its this state of mind that gives you the foundation for being a great partner. When you just happen to meet someone who is in the same state of mind you can't help but be drawn to each other. Its your secret club of happiness and it quickly evolves into a state of love. Ruby and Armand soon found themselves spending day after day with each other and realized that they were meant to be.  This video is a little different to many of our films because we incorporated some interview footage. Often interviews can feel [...]
  • Jennifer & Kevin | Wedding Film | UBC Boathouse, Vancouver, BC

  •   In all the time we've been filming weddings in Vancouver, we've only shot 2 weddings in the rain. Pretty unbelievable huh? That might seem lucky but I've always found the grey days to be lovely to shoot on. Everything is a little softer, quieter, the clouds linger over the trees and it all feels very BC. Which was very apt since this was a destination wedding for Jennifer, Kevin and their guests. This wedding was our last of the year (kinda funny how we began and ended the year at UBC Boathouse) and a really great one to finish with. Jennifer and Kevin really are some of the nicest people you could meet (a BIG thank you for the 5 star review!) and they put together a beautiful wedding, complete with tons of personal touches which brought their venue to life. My amazing wife Danielle (All Dolled Up Studio) provided some stunning makeup and hair styling and we worked with Matt an[...]
  • Austin, Amanda & Curtis // 30th Birthday Celebration // Emerald Restaurant, Vancouver BC

  •   The best aspect of working in the wedding industry is that you're able to build up personal relationships with your clients that you might not get a chance to in other jobs. As a Wedding Cinematographer you're an important part of a very personal experience and so to be asked to document another milestone in someone's life is a real honour. Andrea (of Andrea and Austin) floated the idea of capturing Austin, Amanda (bride's maid) and Curtis' (groomsman) joint 30th party back on their wedding day and it sounded like a great plan to me. We talked a little more over the next few months, put together a nice little package and made it happen. It's really fun to see your clients again, to catch up and continue to document their lives. Its a fun little video and I hope we can make many more in the future!
  • Giovanna & Joe // Highlights Film // Hart House, Burnaby BC

  • We were so spoilt by the first weekend of October here in Vancouver. Not only did we have the most beautiful weekend but we were also very fortunate to film two of our favourite weddings of the year. Gi and Joe chose to get married at Hart House (if you've read our previous blog posts you'll know its a top-5-for-sure location for us), they picked Whitney Lane and her husband Kal to photograph (absolutely one of our first choice photography teams to work with), had Wedding Design Studio provide decor (you'll see plenty of them in our films, and for good reason) and the lovely Paige Petriw took care of the co-ordination. In short, it was one of those everything-coming-together type of weddings. The best thing was that we got to do a Same Day Edit! I don't know why but I love the pressure of Same Day Edits (SDE's), maybe it comes from my days editing sports highlights in Sydney or the c[...]
  • Michelle & Josten // Fall wedding film // Brock House, Vancouver BC

  •   Most people book their weddings in the summer and do you know what? They're missing a trick. This year the last weekend of September and first weekend of October were by far the nicest weekends for weddings; warm but not hot, the days were still long and the light was just perfect. It was almost like filming at golden hour for the whole day, with the sun just a little bit lower in the sky with nice long shadows and directional light. As you can see from Michelle and Josten's wedding the natural beauty of the day complimented everything about their wedding. It was all just, well...... really really pretty! The bride, the decor, the lovely big willow tree at the fantastic Brock House and the sound of the ocean near by (there was even a whale that passed by mid ceremony!). Michelle and Josten were a little unsure about hiring a professional videographer for their day but I'm so gl[...]
  • Paul & Andrew // Wedding Film // The Vancouver Club, Vancouver BC

  • Directed and edited by Mark Relf Cinematography by Alvin Keung and Laurent Danis Planning by Love Struck Events Photography by Green Pomme Photography Make up and hair by Savannah St. Jean from Savvy Beauty Design and Kris Reign  Flowers by Flowerz Wedding officiated by Roxanne Thornton Band Sideone Cake by Sweet Thea Cakes Have we ever had a wedding film with more emotion? Paul and Andrew's story is rich with history, adding so much depth to their wedding film, and we loved that we had such a unique story that we could mould with some truly engaging visuals. You can really feel how close they are when you hear the influence they've had on each others' lives. These guys are an example to all future couples the importance of giving everything to really live  your wedding day by being open and emotionally exposed whilst surrounded by friends and family. The toughest [...]
  • Dahye & Kevin // Wedding Highlight Film // Vancouver Club, Vancouver BC

  •   Directed and edited by Mark Relf Additional cinematography by Daniel Brand Photography by Taryn Baxter Make up and hair by The Love Team by Coa Flowers by Bello Decore Wedding officiated by Karen Ell Cake by Thea Cake What happens in Vegas doesn't always stay in Vegas. Sometimes you bring them home and marry them, especially when they just happen to be from the same town as you. Fate and sheer persistence brought Kevin and Dahye together and we love how their story was present throughout their wedding day.  They were married in the Vancouver Club, one of our favourite downtown locations (maybe its all the British memorabilia?) and decked it out with beautiful arrangements and details. The whole event hit a perfect balance between elegance and fun, filled with great energy and emotion (thank you for the tears Kevin). You guys really knocked this out of the park and gave [...]
  • Andrea & Austin // Bridges Restaurant Granville Island // Vancouver Wedding Film

  •   Granville Island is a very special place in Vancouver and somewhere that we've had the pleasure of filming at several times. So we were ecstatic when we received a message from Taryn Baxter letting us know that she had some clients who were thinking about having their wedding filmed at Bridges Restaurant. Andrea and Austin's film is one of our favourites from this year, not just because of the location, but because its just bursting with love and energy. We really wanted to create something that felt grand and yet intimate at the same time. We loved that we were able to capture some personal moments and have the opportunity to show off the breath-taking scenery as well. We really do appreciate it when a couple, their friends and family give us amazing material to work with. The letters, vows, speeches and setting really came together. This wedding had it all! Thank you Andrea a[...]
  • Carrie & Julien // Wedding Film // Fraser River Lodge, Agassiz,BC

  • Directed and edited by Mark Relf Additional cinematography by Daniel Brand Photography by The Nickersons Make up and hair by Aly McRae We love a good “gear change” in the middle of a wedding film and what better way to segue from epic scenery and emotional moments to mischief and fun with Carrie’s card to her future husband: “Love is….killing each other softly with farts”. This is a film of two halves that reflect the personalities of this sensitive yet fun loving couple. As Julien says in his vows, he couldn't imagine falling in love with someone so different from himself. And while their personalities are indeed different, it was clear on the day that they had so much in common and that they complimented each other so well. As BC wedding film makers we're privileged to be able to film in some truly breathtaking locations and Fraser River Logdge in Agassiz is right up the[...]
  • Elisa & Andy // Vancouver Wedding Film // Hart House, Burnaby BC

  •   Directed and edited by Mark Relf Additional cinematography by Alvin Keung Photography by Blush Wedding Photography Planning and decor by Chandelier Wedding & Event Design Make up and hair by Tori Blush Hart House at Deer Lake Park was the first venue we shot at in Vancouver and its always a pleasure to return. We recently filmed Elisa and Andy's wedding there and lucky for us Kristy from Blush Wedding Photography suggested an alternative location of their ceremony, a beautiful shaded spot down by the creek. For Andy this wasn't just a wedding but also a reunion with old friends (he grew up in Vancouver and now lives with Elisa in Hong Kong) and so this day had extra significance for him. Elisa had remarked to me that they had wanted to incorporate "the essence of Vancouver" in their video somehow and so we headed to Granville Island for some ice cream and a few snaps. A[...]
  • Crystal & Will // Wedding Film // Richmond, BC

  • Filmed and edited by Mark Relf Additional cinematography by Chris Ricci Photography by Vasia Photography  Make up and hair by Kaitlin Hargreaves Many of our couples write to each other on the morning of their wedding day and we really believe it is such a special moment that adds to the anticipation and excitement of a wedding day. It is especially important if you're doing traditional vows as it adds a personal touch that you otherwise might not have, not to mention a healthy dose of emotion that looks great on video! Crystal and Will's letters were so heartfelt and formed a perfect narrative to the opening of their film. "I have loved you for 2465 days..." is such a great statement that begins the story of their new chapter in life. If you're thinking of writing letters to each other, take note of of the words in this film. They tell a story and reveal their hopes for the future.[...]
  • Natalie & Jess // Whistler Wedding Film // Nita Lake Lodge, Whistler, BC

  • Filmed and edited by Mark Relf Additional cinematography by Chris Ricci Photography by Gucio Photography  Make up and hair by All Dolled Up make up and hair studio I'm not sure I've ever seen a  groom adore his new wife as much as Jess. Natalie's words and Jess' expressions of pure joy fill their film with emotion and we couldn't be happier with how it turned out.  We were excited to receive Natalie and Jess' enquiry back in the winter - Whistler is such an epic location and we love filming there. We wanted to make sure that we showed off the landscape, not just for the sake of the film, but because Whistler is a place that this couple love (they both live in Hong Kong and this was a destination wedding for them). So we took our new "flying camera' back up into the mountains a few days after the main event and had some great fun getting a birds eye view of the place.  Wit[...]
  • Blaine & Wyn // Wedding Film BC // Cedar Creek Winery, Kelowna, BC

  • Filmed and edited by Mark Relf Planning by Sweetheart Events Photography by Suzanne Le Stage  Make up by Shimmer and Gloss Hair by Alana Lyla We recently had a crazy weekend of BC wedding filming. Whistler on the Saturday and Kelowna on the Sunday. Normally this isn't the sort of thing we'd do since its pretty exhausting, but when an incredibly friendly couple such as Blaine and Wyn ask you to film their wedding at a vineyard in the Okanagan it really is hard to resist. It was a privilege to be a part of their intimate wedding. As a vendor you really feel more "embedded" in the day when the guest count is lower, being more familiar with friends and family and having a chance to get to know everyone just that little bit better. By the end of the day you're just as much a guest as a vendor! A significant number of their friends and family were also British so it was great to re[...]
  • Mothers' Day 2015

  • Its Mothers day! And as a cinematographer what you do you? You collect some of the best footage of your beautiful baby over the last 6 months (Isla was born in November) and make a mini film for your wife. Putting together these little personal films is so much fun, I was grinning from ear to ear as I edited away. It makes you realize how fast they grow up and how important it is to capture those moments as they fly past you without noticing. Photo credit: Marcee Rea photography. By the way Marcee took some really incredible photos of Isla a couple of weeks after she was born. You can get in touch with her at www.marceerae.com
